Well, when Iphicles was introduced to the board. He'd lost his wife, Rena, and the burden of ruling was become a drudgery. When they're introduced at the bar, Gabrielle is still idealistic, full of fresh ideas. It intrigued him. She pulled him out of the brooding he'd been doing since the loss of his wife, and reminded him that there was still fun in life.

I have the first two episodes that Iphicles was in on DVD. I rewatched them to try and figure out what his character was about. Unfortunately, I don't have the later episode. I know there are probably some nuances there, that I'm forgetting.
